I got both Jackson and Sadeem out today, but mostly worked with Sadeem.

Sadeem

Sadeem made progress from yesterday. He didn’t rear as much and seemed calmer. I worked on rewarding him when he came up to me and stood quietly. I plan on reinforcing this behavior a lot. He seems to want to come up to me, do something, and get a treat. This is a problem when I have my back to him. I never know if he might rear or do a Jambette right behind me!

I think I am going to solve this by rewarding when he comes up to me only if he stands quietly. Then I will go to his side and ask him for a behavior that I can reward while still staying safe. He also seems to want to turn his butt toward me, but it doesn’t seem aggressive. Could this be insecurity on his part?

But he did do better today. He even followed me up to the house all by himself. He hasn’t done that before! I really petted and rewarded him for being so brave.

His Jambette is getting pretty good, so I am going to try to introduce forward movement a little at a time. No rush, but just quietly working toward the Spanish walk.

Jackson

Didn’t do much with Jackson, just asked him to walk with me. I have mostly only trained him to walk on my right side, but now I see I need to work on this. Since Jackson is most comfortable bowing on his right knee with me on his right side, I am going to work with him more from his right side. I want to then train Sadeem to work on my right side and to bow on his left knee.

I took both Jackson and Sadeem with me when I went to get the mail. Once we got to the mailbox, they both decided to go for a trot in the corn field there. I wasn’t too worried. They came back after a couple of minutes. I think they were just having some fun.

Not much to tell today.
